#21 Pierre Gasly (FRA – Prema Dallara-Mecachrome)
Qualifying 1: 1st – Race 1 Grid: 1st – Race 1 Result: 3rd
Reverse Grid (Top 8) Race 2 Grid: 6th – Race 2 Result: 2nd
GP2 Series: 1st – 32 points – after 2 of 22 races
With a third and a second from the opening races of the GP2 season in Barcelona after heading practice and qualifying, Pierre Gasly can be very satisfied. The 20-year-old Frenchman leads the points table in the Prema team's debut season in the ultra competitive series.
Gasly was happy with the Spanish event. "It's been a pretty good weekend, fastest in free practice, pole and two podiums to lead the points table."
"Still the first race was a bit frustrating, after being quickest in practice and qualifying you obviously go into the race with high expectations. It was all going well, I had a lead, the guys did a great job with the pit stop and it was looking good until 10 laps to the end then safety car came out. We lost all the gap."
"With the options we just didn't have the same pace, the fronts were a problem, they just weren't working so we were struggling and I lost places. I did everything I could and P3 isn't bad but I obviously wanted more. We have to work on the way the options work and we will."
Reverse grid fun
"The second race was really good, a lot of fun. Starting from P6 I had a good start and the car was great. We passed people early on and then I managed my tyres a bit so I could go after Alex (Lynn) for the win at the end. Running second the gap was down to 1.4 so just a few tenths outside the DRS zone when we got another safety car."
"That stayed out until right at the end which was a shame because we certainly had the pace to have a go for the win, I had the fastest lap of the race. That's racing though and it all added up to a great weekend. It was the first weekend in GP2 for Prema and we are leading the points so that's not bad at all."
