It was a hard driving end to the Formula Renault Eurocup season in Barcelona for Red Bull Junior Neil Verhagen. The 17-year-old American scored two seventh places, getting the most out of his Tech 1 Renault after starting from twelfth and eighth.

The two good points scoring finishes lifted him to eleventh in the points table. For Verhagen it was a solid way to end the season. "Overall this weekend was positive, we ran well in both races and got some good points. So it wasn't a bad way to end the year but it has to be said that we didn't have the year that we were expecting or that we were looking for."

Tough to overtake

"Qualifying was not as good as it was in Germany but this morning we were in a position to do quite well, I was looking to get absolutely everything out of the car, pushed it to the limit everywhere and just a fraction too hard in sector three, missed an apex, went wide and lost a bit of time on a lap that should have put us P2."

"That's a shame but it happens when you are trying everything you can. We started P8, I got to P7 but it is so hard to pass here and I was running behind two cars, that makes it even worse, the guy in front of me was getting a tow so I couldn't use the slipstream on him, all I was getting was the disadvantage of the aero wash so I tried but there just wasn't a way through."

Good times

"We've certainly had some good races this year, high points like Monaco, we had good pace there, good tough races. At the Red Bull Ring I enjoyed driving from ninth to fourth, including overtaking 3 guys into turn one. That was another good memory as was working with the team and digging ourselves out of a difficult period for Hockenheim, then finishing well here."

"I did a lot of learning this year and I never expected it to be easy."
