Two excellent qualifying sessions and a particularly fine fight back from the second of the two first lap incidents of the weekend on Sunday proved both the pace and the fighting spirit of Patricio O'Ward and the Carlin team in IndyCar around the streets of Detroit.

From a P7 start in Race 1 O'Ward was squeezed into the wall on lap one on Saturday and then tapped into a spin after starting P8 in Race 2 on Sunday.

"Yes, around these street circuits we can really hustle the car," enthused the 20-year-old Mexican Red Bull Junior. "We came from a long way down today and really showed our pace, made full use of the yellows and got back in there after being hit on the first lap."

"Qualifying seventh and eighth up against the big guns, we were pleased with that and but for first lap incidents in both races we would have done a lot better. But you know, ifs and maybes don't count for a lot, we can be very happy with what we achieved, particularly today when we could have had a couple of DNFs."

After a very good run in the wet on Saturday following the push into the wall that required a pit stop for a new nose and left the car with suspension damage through the Race 1, O'Ward did even better in the dry on Sunday.

Having been tapped into the spin, he was then hit hard and forced to pit on the first lap. Left in 20th and a lap down, he and the team used some full course yellows and good tactics to get back into contention. With a couple of great restarts, aggressive moves and real pace the number 31 clawed itself back up to 11th after the full 70 laps.
