Super Formula - Gasly denied his championship chance as Suzuka is abandoned

#15 Pierre Gasly (FRA – Team Mugen Honda HR-417E)
Super Formula championship: 2nd – 33 points – after 7 of 9 races

Pierre Gasly went to Suzuka with every chance of taking the Super Formula championship in the two races to be run on Sunday. But the event was abandoned as the biggest typhoon ever was forecasted to hit Japan on race day.

The 21-year-old Frenchman was third fastest in Free Practice, eighth quickest in Q1 that was stopped and restarted several times because of rain and accidents. The rest of Saturday's Qualifying was abandoned because of heavy rain.

With no races run, the Red Bull Junior was left just half a point behind Hiroaki Ishiura who was declared Series Champion. Gasly won Rookie of the Year honours.

No Chance

As Super Formula explained on social media. "We wanted nothing more than our drivers to compete on the track for the championship today, or another day. But you can't win against mother nature."

"Please know that we tried to re-schedule both races for another day before year's end, but with Pierre Gasly in F1, other drivers competing in WEC and different categories, it was impossible."
