A tough Renault Eurocup for Verhagen at the Hungaroring

It was not the Formula Renault Eurocup weekend in Hungary that Red Bull Junior Neil Verhagen was looking for. "No, we spent the weekend on the struggle bus," was the way the 17-year-old American expressed it after a wet Sunday.

"I didn't feel that the car was completely there for me this weekend though the engineers were telling me that everything was as it should be. We just never found the balance between understeer and oversteer, we went from one to the other."

"It is very frustrating considering the pace I had here last year and the pace we have had at times this season. That is what we have to investigate during the follow-up," said Verhagen, who was third in 2017.

A short charge in Race 1

Starting from P20 on the grid in Race 1 the Tech 1 driver went on the attack. "I did overtake but the gains I made were at the beginning of the race. After lap 1 I couldn't get close enough to the cars in front to make a move. I was already suffering understeer and when the aero-wash was added there was no way to get close."

Add some water for Race 2

"The rain started this morning and conditions changed through the day, dry, intermediate and full wets. It was wet for Race 2 and I got hit on the second lap. In some sports I would have got a gold medal as I performed a perfect double 360 and carried on. Unfortunately we don't get points for that so we have to find the solutions to our lack of pace."

"It's not satisfactory for the team and it is in no way satisfactory for me, so we will get our heads together and work out what we need to do so that it doesn't happen again," concluded the very determined Verhagen.
