FIA Formula 3 European Championship position: 15th – 32.5 points – after 24 of 33 races
All the hard work in the run up to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship weekend at the Red Bull Ring saw Red Bull Junior Callum Ilott take a step forward in his driving development. Slower in and faster out certainly worked but a torrential downpour left the 16-year-old Briton with just half a point for tenth in the much shortened Race 3.
"Most of our weekend was dry though and in the second free practice things were looking OK with P8 but I found I couldn't improve enough towards the end of the qualifying sessions," explained Ilott. "I would get a few tenths quicker while some of the others could do more and I got pushed down the leaderboard a bit. There is not a lot in it, the times are all very close."
The next job
The effort in the sim prior to the Austrian weekend was put into getting out of the corners quicker to improve the speed down the straights. "The difference was in the fast corner sections," said the Carlin driver. "I was the quickest in my team through the first three slower corners, the work we have done on getting my corner exit speed up has worked and I was really happy with that. I couldn't maintain that through the fast corners though."
"I am still lacking experience there and it is hard to get that experience in the sim, you don't really get the feel for what the rear is doing, how much grip you've got left in the tyres so I need track time. I am already getting better there, I'm closer, but for sure that's where I need more work."
Races 1 and 2
A pit stop in Race 1 to change the nose after an early collision left Ilott at the back of the field. "Yes it was the fourth lap and my team mate was in front, he was looking at an overtaking move so that gave me an opportunity on him but as I got into the corner he squeezed and there just wasn't enough room and I got a damaged front wing out of it."
"It was a good Race 2, all very close, I lost my right side mirror on lap four (see photo). That hindered me a bit as you can't see anything in the left mirror because of the airbox. I had a purple sector time and I think the fifth fastest lap time (1:25.670) so I was quite happy with the pace even though I wanted better than P12 at the end, I made a couple of mistakes but it was still a good race."
Just 4 laps for Race 3
"It was a shame because I was tenth on the grid and looking forward to it. I did about three laps all the same in second qualifying so that gave me a better grid position. The weather was just too bad though, so much water we couldn't see anything," explained Ilott. The race finished in grid order after a total of just four laps and so half points were awarded.
