F3 - Callum Ilott returns to Zandvoort for the Masters

Great names have won the Zandvoort Masters of Formula 3 race, David Coulthard won the first event in 1991, Lewis Hamilton won in 2005 and Max Verstappen last year. It is a non championship event that nevertheless attracts top drivers and a lot of attention. Red Bull Junior Callum Ilott lines up with his eyes set on the podium for this 25th edition.

"There are a few things different this weekend," explains the 16-year-old Briton who is in his first F3 season. "One is that I have driven here before, at the F3 championship race in July, so I know the track. The other is that we are on different tyres for this race, Kumhos, so I hope I can adapt to them quicker than some of the others."

Lessons learnt

"There are only 20 cars here instead of the 36 we had for the championship round so I think that will make for better racing. It should be a lot of fun."

"I think I can do a better job than I did at the championship round. I have learnt a bit since then so I should be able to qualify better than the 12th and 13th I did then. I should also be quite a bit better at the starts. So I'm aiming to get myself in the position to fight for the podium."

Ready to go

"We had a problem with the Carlin sim but we managed to get a bit of time in another one so I think I am well prepared to get out on track, we get decent amount of practice, two 40 minute sessions before qualifying."

"The weather isn't good at the moment, it's raining," explained Ilott on Thursday. "It's supposed to bet a bit better over the weekend but we'll see. I'm OK either way, wet or dry. My record recently has probably been better in the wet so that might help in qualifying but it doesn't matter much, I'm not bothered. Either way it's going to be a good weekend."
