#30 Callum Ilott (GBR – Carlin Dallara-VW)
FIA Formula 3 European Championship position: 13th – 53.5 points – after 30 of 33 races
Callum Ilott concludes his first FIA Formula 3 European Championship season this weekend with a return to Hockenheim. The German circuit was also the venue for races 4, 5 and 6 back in May when the 16-year-old Briton scored 13th, 5th and 10th.
"I had a good run there last time and we are out to more than replicate that, we are looking to improve with all that I have learn't since then," enthused the Red Bull Junior.
All round gains
"I am pleased with the improvements over the last few races, the Nürburgring showed some good things, not huge steps but I got to grips with things and made real gains all round, a lot of points and that is was builds things and gets results."
"I know that the thing I can still improve what will make a big difference is qualifying. Unfortunately that seems to be too much of a lottery. At the Nürburgring, in the first session I found space and in the second I didn't."
Hard to find
"You can work with the team to get out on track into space but there is no telling what the drivers in front are going to do. If they are slowing down you will still come up on them and that spoils the lap. In the second session I went slow for a few laps looking for space and never found it."
"There are times when following someone quick can be a good thing but you are very rarely lucky enough to find the right guy on the right lap. It is easier in a place like Spa where everyone is well spread out but Hockenheim is more middle length and finding space will not be easy."
All the same
"Still it is the same for everyone and all part of learning. I've got a couple of sim sessions this week before we go to Germany. I am sure I will learn more in those and as I said, go to Germany to improve on the good results from last time."
