Callum Ilott certainly deserved points from his Portuguese F3 outing but the 16-year-old Briton was empty handed even though he was well into the leaderboard often through the extended period in Portimão. The week started with two days of testing where he was in the hunt in all four sessions, 5th, 10th, 6th and 6th.
The race weekend proper began even better for the Red Bull Junior, he was fastest in the opening session on Friday and that gave him the second fastest time for the day of Free Practice. "That was the thing that is really disappointing," admitted the Carlin driver. "It was a really great start, I was enjoying the car and the track but It kind of went down hill from there."
Changes not for the better
"We don't know why but as the conditions changed we didn't do so well as a team. Whether it was the fact that there was more rubber on the track or the temperature, the week started windy but that died away, we just didn't do as well."
"Still qualifying wasn't a disaster and I wanted to have a go at getting some good points in all three races."
"In Race 1 the official starter made a mistake, well two mistakes actually. He left the red lights on for 0.2 seconds, then the lights went green. That threw me and quite a few others. Some just went for it and they got the jump on us. I finished the first lap 16th and that's where I finished the race."
"For Race 2 I got a good start and was up to 11th or 12th I think. But then I was overtaken time and time again down the straight, in the end some guy forgot to brake and punted me across the corner backwards so that wasn't a good way to finish."
"In the last race today I got up to seventh and then we had a restart, I was side by side with Leclerc through a few corners then this guy decided to pass me with two wheels on the grass, that stuffed up him and me but I came off worse. I was just trying to make it up from there," explained Ilott who finished 11th while Charles Leclerc went on to take seventh.
