FIA Formula 3 European Championship position: 12th – 65.5 points – after 33 of 33 races
Callum Ilott revels in difficult conditions and made the best of a treacherous Hockenheimring for the final race of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship season, cutting through from 12th on the grid to finish fifth.
"We didn't know whether to go with slicks or wets," explained the 16-year-old Briton. "It was a really hard call but we went with slicks even though we were starting on the wet side of the grid. That hampered the start and on the first lap I dropped to nineteenth."
"It was drying though and I thought it would come to us. I made a few good moves and some of the guys in front had to pit so we came home fifth with the bonus of points for fourth because Sims is not in the championship," explained the Red Bull Junior.
"So not a bad way to end the year, good fun and I was second Rookie home as well. I seem to have a lot of fun in those conditions."
A tough start, a good drive
The weekend had not started so well. "No, on the first or second qualifying lap of qualifying I clipped the inside kerb hard and damaged the suspension so that was it for the session. It made a good race though as I came through from 32nd to 15th, passing people everywhere, a lot of fun."
"In Race 2 I was 14th on the grid but right from the start I felt I had a lot of pace over the guys in front. I made some moves but just couldn't make them stick, I'd get past only to have them cut back inside and I was 11th at the finish which better than we started but still pretty frustrating."
A good finish
"I was happy with the last race. It's been a very difficult first season, it is an exceptionally tough class this year and overall I don't think it was a bad year. I've had some good results, just not the consistently good results I wanted. In some cases we could have done better and certainly I've learnt a lot."
"The Carlin team have been great, I feel very at home here and they've given me a good, reliable car and great support."
"We ended the season well and I'm feeling confident, very much looking forward to the Macau F3 race. I've driven on the game and it looks awesome," enthused Ilott.
