Grand Prix Grid: 27th – Grand Prix Result: DNF
Callum Ilott grabbed the attention early in Macau when his pace in the opening qualifying session netted him P2. It had all the makings of a great street circuit debut for the 17-year-old Briton but good fortune then deserted the Red Bull Junior resulting in a string of incidents.
"It all started very well," explained Ilott. "Free Practice was good and I really enjoyed qualifying, put in a good time even though I didn't go for the new tyres as some of the others did."
"I was feeling good about things and Free Practice 2 was also good, just making good use of the used tyres and getting ready for Q2. I went out in Q2, it's a long lap and after the out lap I felt the tyres were ready but on the first flying lap I guess they weren't quite up to temperature and I overdid it and the rear came round. That was it for the session."
No time in Q2 left him 18th on the grid for the Qualifying Race thanks to his time from Q1. "I got a good enough start and was up to about 14th when Juncadella crashed up ahead. We were all in a train with no way to see exactly what was happening ahead. I pulled over to go around but didn't make it."
"That left me starting 27th for the Grand Prix and I was cautious at the start, there had been a lot of crashes. This time there weren't and I could have gained some places but I didn't. I started to pick up the pace but the brakes were snatching. I was trying to deal with it but it caught me out and I went straight on. Not the way I wanted to finish Macau," concluded Ilott.
Ilott was left with injuries to both hands thanks to the Juncadella incident in the Qualifying Race, torn ligaments that he shrugged off to race in the Grand Prix.
