Patricio O’Ward challenges for IndyCar Grand Prix win

#31 Patricio O'Ward (MEX – Carlin Chevrolet)
Qualifying: 19th - Grid: 19th – Race Result: 19th

Patricio O'Ward's first race as a Red Bull Junior saw the Carlin driver challenge for the win in the IndyCar Grand Prix on the Indianapolis road course. The 20-year-old Mexican went from P19 on the grid to finish 19th but that hides the real story.

"We ran a really really good race, we can all be very proud of that," enthused Pato. "From being at the back after an incident at the start we got up to running second for a good while, saving fuel, running a pace and a strategy that could have seen us win the race."

Tough start

O'Ward was hit with a drive through penalty for 'avoidable contact' at the start. "We had to come back from that, we got a safety period that bunched the pack up and we started to make some moves, working our way through. I was really enjoying it and the car was working well."

Tough call

"We got ourselves up to second and we really could have won it but then just the wrong call on a tyre change that left us with a set of tyres, on too high a pressure and no grip, like driving on ice. Dropping down the field until we swapped again, got the right tyres and pressures but we'd lost our chance."

"That's frustrating but we can all hold our heads high today, we adapted quickly to the changing conditions as it was raining on and off from the start and we were right there with the pace to win. We can take that into the next races."
