The streets of Detroit call Patricio O’Ward for IndyCar

Patricio O’Ward

#31 Patricio O'Ward (MEX – Carlin Chevrolet)
IndyCar Championship position: 22nd – 67 points – after 6 of 17 races (contesting selected races)

The NTT IndyCar series moves to Detroit, Michigan this weekend and Red Bull Junior Patricio O'Ward will be in action in the Carlin Chevrolet. Held on Belle Isle, a 982 acre (3.97sqkm) island in the Detroit River, the circuit is 2.35 miles (3.78km) with 14 turns. For the championship it is a unique double-header weekend, which includes two full, points-paying races.

"I'm really looking forward to this weekend," stated the 20-year-old after flying into the US on Wednesday after a break at home in Mexico. "Detroit is a street track, a cool unique circuit, bumpy, you can't afford to make any mistakes and I'm keen to get back in the car at a track where you can, as the driver, make a big difference. You can influence the car and are not so much of a passenger as you are on an oval. So turn the page on what happened at the 500."

"I had success there in 2017 winning the IMSA Prototype Championship race," he enthused, it was one of 7 wins on his way to taking the title. "It should be a good week for us. It will be interesting to see how the Chevrolet cars like ours stack up against the Hondas. Last year Detroit was a Honda track but Chevrolet are working all the time on development so we'll see where we've got to."

IndyCar rules are specific in a number of areas including the tyre allocation and power boost allowances for each event. For the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix these are:

Push-to-pass parameters: 150 seconds of total time with a maximum time of 15 seconds per activation (for each race).

Firestone tire allotment: Nine sets primary, four sets alternate (weekend). Teams must use one set of primary and alternate tires in each race.
